‘CES 201’ A 3D EXTRAVAGANZA

The CES 2011 this year held in Las Vegas was one explosive affair. The event last year saw the full time launch of the first generation of TV sets. This was met with much fan fare and people are all looking forward to the new age of 3D TV sets. Everyone, from Sony to Panasonic, Toshiba and Samsung, have all been at the helm of things big time and full throttle. The overwhelming units of 3D TV sets that were manufactured by these TV makers did do decent but then that’s about it. The two main factors behind the low sales of these 3D TV sets were that they are very expensive.

Then again the second issue is that there isn’t much 3D content available either. This apart the current economic problem is yet to settle down completely and people in the United States are still skeptical of buying a very expensive 3D TV sets while the European and UK market looks getting better. These 3D TV sets are actually HD TV sets which offer 3D vision when one puts 3D glasses on. There are two types of 3D technologies, the active 3D and the passive 3D. If Sony and Panasonic have fully invested in the active shutter 3D technology then LG has gone on to produce the passive technology based 3D TV sets big time.

Although the passive technology is much cheaper the catch is that the picture quality of active shutter is much better. As many as 3.2 million 3D TV sets sold in the United States itself. But then, compare this with the fact that there were 24.7 million TV sets manufactured. So thus it means that the 3D TV sales have actually been underwhelming. In the mean while there were further advanced 3D sets also presented at the CES this year which did not need the use of 3D glasses to watch the picture in 3D.
